clerkMiddleware() setup

Setup

npm install @clerk/tanstack-react-start

Pin a version you have tested, commit the lockfile, and use npm ci in CI builds.

.env:

CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY=pk_...
CLERK_SECRET_KEY=sk_...

Keep the env file out of version control and commit only placeholder values. CLERK_SECRET_KEY is server only: keep it free of any client exposed prefix, and read it only in server code such as clerkMiddleware or createServerFn. Only the publishable key may reach the browser.

src/start.ts (Vinxi entry):

import { clerkMiddleware } from '@clerk/tanstack-react-start/server'
import { createStart } from '@tanstack/react-start'

export const startInstance = createStart(() => {
  return {
    requestMiddleware: [clerkMiddleware()],
  }
})

src/routes/__root.tsx — wrap with <ClerkProvider>:

import { ClerkProvider } from '@clerk/tanstack-react-start'

function RootDocument({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
  return (
    <html lang="en">
      <body>
        <ClerkProvider>
          {children}
        </ClerkProvider>
      </body>
    </html>
  )
}

Mental Model

TanStack Start runs on Vite. Auth flows through two layers:

  1. Server layer — createServerFn + auth() from @clerk/tanstack-react-start/server
  2. Router layer — beforeLoad on route definitions, throws redirect for unauthenticated

createServerFn handlers always run on the server. beforeLoad and loaders are isomorphic: they run on the server during SSR and in the browser during client navigation. Call auth() and read secrets only inside server functions, and treat beforeLoad redirects as a user experience step rather than the security boundary. Client hooks (useAuth, useUser) are React hooks for the browser side.

Minimal Pattern

import { createFileRoute, redirect } from '@tanstack/react-router'
import { createServerFn } from '@tanstack/react-start'
import { auth } from '@clerk/tanstack-react-start/server'

const authStateFn = createServerFn().handler(async () => {
  const { isAuthenticated, userId } = await auth()
  if (!isAuthenticated) {
    throw redirect({ to: '/sign-in' })
  }
  return { userId }
})

export const Route = createFileRoute('/dashboard')({
  beforeLoad: async () => await authStateFn(),
})

Authorization Rule

Every createServerFn is a callable endpoint, whatever route guard is in place. Each server function that reads or changes protected data must call auth() itself, reject callers who are not signed in, and check that the userId or orgId is allowed to access the specific record, for example by matching the record ownerId or org before returning or changing it. Route context returned from beforeLoad is for display and routing only.

Common Pitfalls

SymptomCauseFix

auth() returns empty

Missing clerkMiddleware in start.ts

Add to requestMiddleware array

redirect not thrown

Using return instead of throw

throw redirect(...) in TanStack

Wrong import for auth

Mixing client/server imports

Server: @clerk/tanstack-react-start/server

Loader context missing userId

Not passing from beforeLoad

Return from beforeLoad, access via context

ClerkProvider missing

Forgot root wrapping

Add to __root.tsx shell component

Template

The tanstack-basic-auth template is for local development. Before a production build, remove the router devtools and change the default error component so it shows a generic message in place of the stack trace.
